As part of Virtua, a multi-hospital healthcare organization serving the beautiful suburban neighborhoods of the South Jersey community, our three year residency program offers a wealth of educational opportunities and experiences in podiatric medicine.
History
The Virtua Health Podiatric Residency began in 1984 as a 24-month podiatric surgical program at West Jersey Health System. The program provided one slot per year until 1988 at which time a second slot was added. In 1999, the West Jersey Health System merged with Memorial Hospital Burlington County to form Virtua. In 2019, Virtua acquired Lourdes Health System.

Residency training provides a combination of medical and surgical experiences that are competency-based. Virtua’s 36-month Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR) includes training in rear foot and ankle surgery.

- PGY1 $64,000.00
- PGY2 $66,560.00
- PGY3 $69,222.40
Chief Resident: $70,606.85
Benefits:
CME: $1,500 & 5 days (all years)
Vacation: 3 weeks (all years)
Health: Medical, dental, and vision coverage for resident and dependents with minimal employee contribution. This medical plan is designed to meet the needs of employees and their families. It provides an opportunity for reduced administrative costs.
Professional Liability Insurance: Coverage for resident rotations (occurrence plus policy).

- 2 Lab Coats
- On-call meals
- One time state licensure and permit fee

Meet the Program Director & Residents
John Girimonte, DPM
Podiatry Residency Program Director
Dr. John Girimonte is a graduate of Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. After he completed his Podiatry residency at Virtua in 2000, he accepted a position as a faculty member in the Camden Podiatry Center. Dr. Girimonte became Program Director for the residency in September 2006. He is very proud to be a former resident of the program and enthusiastically conveys to his residents the importance of obtaining the premier skills and knowledge to become the quality and future of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

Joshua Ekladios, DPM
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
Joshua chose Virtua due to the high-volume caseload, hands-on experience, resident autonomy, and great mix of foot and ankle trauma/sports medicine/limb salvage surgeries. In his free time, he enjoys finding new music, playing guitar, weightlifting, basketball, and cooking.
Flavia Filisio, DPM
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
Flavia had no doubts and wanted to do her residency program at Virtua after rotating here as a student. She feels that Virtua has the most amount and variety of cases she's seen and all of the Attendings are extremely nice, patient, and great teachers. She notes that it's a great learning environment! Outside of her residency program, she loves travelling, playing tennis, and going to the beach.
PGY 2:
Dhara Doshi, DPM
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
Dhara chose Virtua because it’s a very hands-on program where you can scrub in to a diversity of cases from your first year, and work with so many Attendings to learn different techniques. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring and trying new places to eat.
Chirag Soni, DPM
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
Chirag noted that Virtua was his number one choice for many reasons, including but not limited to a large surgical and patient volume, favorable personalities of all the Attendings, and competent and knowledgeable residents at the program. His hobbies include reading, learning about different things in the world, spending time with friends, listening to music, traveling, and working out.
PGY 1:
Maarij Ahmed, DPM
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
Marrij chose Virtua because the Attendings and residents are all friendly, approachable, and willing to teach. There are also a great number and variety of cases with numerous different Attendings from which to learn different techniques. The autonomy residents are given helps develop their skills over the three years of residency. In his free time, he enjoys playing and watching sports, hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
Jinal Parikh, DPM
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
Jinal notes that Virtua's podiatric residency program offers skilled Attendings that love to teach. The diverse inpatient population, pathologies, and hands-on training made it an appealing program for her. When she is not working, she enjoys watching Netflix and cooking.
Virtua Podiatry Residency Criteria
To be considered by Virtua Podiatry Residency for a PGY1 position:
- All applications must come through CASPR.
- No faxes or emails will be accepted. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE PRE-SCREENED!
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. Virtua will not sponsor applicants for employment visas.
- The date of medical school graduation cannot exceed 2 years prior to the academic year.
- All applicants must be interviewed virtually before being accepted.
Eligibility for the Virtua Podiatry Program:
- Must graduate from approved Podiatric Medicine program
- Pass step I and II exams
- US Citizen, classified as a resident alien, or hold J-1 Visa
Standards and Practices for Resident Selection
Virtua faithfully adheres to the principles and practices of to The Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine. (AACPM) is a national non-profit educational association whose interests extend to all phases of graduate podiatric medical education. COTH is charged with the administration of the programs designed to create an organized and equitable residency selection process. These standards are applicable to all residency programs participating in the national application and matching service and were developed to ensure that the institutions will exercise the highest of ethical and professional standards in the conduct of their graduate training activities.

CASPR/CRIP is operated by the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine and administered by its Council of Teaching. What does the interview day look like?
- Interviews are held virtually, in January
- Interviews are with the DIO, Program Director, Faculty and Residents.
- Careful consideration is applied to each candidate’s documentation packet prior to their invitation and arrival for their interview.
