OB/GYN Residency Program

As a resident in the Virtua OB/GYN Residency program, you will have the unique opportunity to work at two Virtua hospitals.

Virtua Voorhees

Virtua Voorhees Hospital in Voorhees, N.J. focuses on the emergency, surgical, and medical needs of adults with a separate adults-only emergency room and a wing exclusively for complex adult surgery performed in state-of-the-art operating suites. All hospital rooms are private and family friendly, with an area for someone to stay comfortably overnight. There is a wing devoted to women and children. The hospital provides a warm, welcoming, and healing environment while promoting personalized service and enhanced healing through the use of light, space, and technology. The hospital is entirely digital via our sophisticated EMR system, EPIC, which includes computerized order entry and physician documentation. Our EMR is shared across all Virtua-owned outpatient offices and hospitals.

Virtua Mount Holly

Virtua Mount Holly Hospital in Mount Holly, N.J. is renowned for its expertise in advanced surgical and medical care. Virtua Mount Holly is the only full-service hospital with obstetrics and maternity care in Burlington County. The Special Care Nursery for newborn babies at Virtua Mount Holly earned the gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence in 2020. The hospital is entirely digital via our sophisticated EMR system, EPIC, which includes computerized order entry and physician documentation. Our EMR is shared across all Virtua-owned outpatient offices and hospitals.

We will be accepting applications through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Due to COVID-19, we will hold interviews this year in a virtual format in accordance with the guidelines put out by Council of Resident Education of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We will hold our interviews in November, December, and January.

Virtua OB/GYN Residency Criteria

To be considered by Virtua OB/GYN Residency for a PGY1 position:

• All applications must come through the ERAS.
• No faxes or emails will be accepted. No applications will be pre-screened.
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. Virtua will not sponsor applicants for employment visas.
• The date of medical school graduation cannot exceed three years prior to the academic year.
• USMLE/COMLEX Steps 1 and 2 must have a passing score.
• Applicants must be graduates of LCME-approved schools.
• All applicants must be interviewed before being accepted.

For international graduates:

• ECFMG certifications must be complete.
• There is no US clinical experience requirement, but it is preferred.

How do I apply?

All applications for a PGY1 position must come through ERAS. Our program is a participant in The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

What does the interview day look like?

• Interviews are conducted weekly from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (approx.)
• Morning session: Program overview
• Interview with faculty, staff, and program director
• Virtual tour of facilities

What should I do to prepare for my interview?

• Please ensure that all documentation is uploaded to ERAS (i.e. three letters of recommendation, dean's letter, medical school transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX scores, personal statement, ECFMG certificate, CV, etc.).
• Make sure you visit the residency webpage and social media page.

What should I do the day of my interview?

• We will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m., so plan to arrive 15 minutes early.

Are walk-ins welcome on the day of the interview?

Walk-ins will not be interviewed. The residency program requires that documents be submitted in full through ERAS. Careful consideration is applied to each candidate's documentation packet prior to their invitation and arrival for their interview. If you are interested in the program, please take the proper steps to apply through ERAS, as this will be the only way that your candidacy will be considered.

PGY1

The goal of the intern year is to introduce the basics. In obstetrics, residents will gain knowledge in the normal physiology of pregnancy and management of the normal labor process; perform uncomplicated vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections; ultrasound in low-risk patients; and triage routine complaints during pregnancy. In gynecology, the residents will expand their knowledge of the normal menstrual cycle, contraception counseling, and management of vaginitis; and perform minor procedures such as LEEP, hysteroscopy, and basic laparoscopy. The residents will rotate through not only our outpatient offices – gaining exposure to subspecialty areas like maternal-fetal medicine and FPMRS – but expand their knowledge in primary care by rotating in a family medicine outpatient office. The continuity clinic will be a month-long rotation in which patients are shared amongst their class. The patients will mainly be uncomplicated OB patients, routine GYN, and family planning. During the second half of the year, the resident will be asked to identify a mentor and a research idea.

Rotations:

PGY2

The second year will be focused on learning how to manage abnormal presentation and more complex surgical cases. In obstetrics, the resident will learn the management of abnormal labor and medically complex pregnancies and perform repeat cesarean section. In gynecology, the resident will participate in more advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic cases, learn the principles of robotic surgery, and be exposed to gynecologic oncology and REI. On the night float rotation, residents will begin to gain more independence in management of patients and, while at Virtua Mount Holly, exercise some autonomy while caring for patients. During their ambulatory month, the residents will begin to see more medically complicated patients, perimenopausal/post-menopausal patients, and complex OB patients. This year, the resident will work with his/her mentor to develop a research idea and perform a literature search. The idea, background information, and research design will be presented to the faculty toward the end of the year.

Rotations:

PGY3

The PGY3 year is designed to develop and present an opportunity to display leadership skills. The resident will have the chance to be a chief on the maternal fetal medicine service and GYN. The resident will build on medical knowledge in regard to management of complex patients in obstetrics and gynecology. Surgical skills will be developed in advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery. We also offer an elective rotation this year. The resident will work on implementing and finishing his/her research idea. The finished product will be presented at our research night in the spring.

PGY4

The last year of residency will be focused on developing supervision and teaching skills of junior learners in addition to perfecting their ambulatory and procedural skills. Residents will act as chiefs for each of the rotations. In addition, they will participate in the more advanced surgical procedures in the subspecialty areas, such as REI, FPMRS, and GYN oncology. Residents will have the opportunity to submit their research projects to various publications or present at meetings to increase their academic scholarship.

What is the volume and surgical experience?

Virtua Health system performs more than 7,500 deliveries between the Mount Holly and Voorhees locations. The system performs over 1,000 major gynecological procedures a year. Residents will be exposed to a vast number of patients and surgeries.

What will the call schedule be like?

Our program will institute a night float system that will cover the hospitals during the week from Sunday to Thursday. The weekend coverage will be provided by residents who are not on night float. The weekends will be split as follows: Friday call will be 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday. Saturday call will be a full 24 hours, ending at 7 a.m. on Sunday. The same team that covered Friday will return Sunday a.m. and stay until night float arrives that evening. Residents will average about one to two calls a month.

Are there any other residency programs at Virtua?

Yes. Virtua has a well-established family medicine residency program. In addition, there are residencies in dental, pharmacy, and podiatry. Our hospitals host residents from other institutions in the emergency room, pediatric surgery, and urology. In addition, Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital hosts internal medicine residents from other institutions.

What is the volume of high-risk obstetrics?

With 7,500 deliveries a year, you are guaranteed to have a high-volume, high-risk experience. Our residents from the intern year rotate with our maternal-fetal medicine physicians learning ultrasound, fetal assessment, and management of complex pregnancies.

What teaching responsibilities will the residents have?

We host students from Rowan University, Drexel University, and Thomas Jefferson University Sidney Kimmel Medical Center. A student is assigned to both the OB and GYN services, including night float. The residents also will have a chance to interact with advanced provider trainees, such as midwifery and nurse practitioner students. 

How much cesarean, forceps, and VBAC experience will the residents have?

The residents cover all cesarean sections. Our system averages about 2,000 deliveries a year by cesarean section. Operative deliveries always have a resident involved. We average about 300 operative deliveries a year.

Will residents have their own continuity clinic?

Our program will have a unique continuity clinic rotation. It will be a month-long ambulatory rotation, where residents will follow a panel of patients along with their classmates – very similar to how the “real world” functions. The residents at the beginning and end of their rotation will sign out to their classmate who is following them. To maintain continuity, the clinic month is followed by a month of GYN, allowing the resident to operate on the patients they worked up during their ambulatory rotation.

Is there a research requirement?

Yes. We have created a very simple roadmap for residents to achieve the end result of a research project. In PGY1 year, a topic or idea will be identified by the end of the year. The resident will work with a research mentor to perform a literature search in the PGY2 year. In PGY3, the resident will implement his/her research project and present its success at our research night. In the PGY4 year, the resident will have time to present his/her project at conferences and also submit to publications for review.

What type of didactics sessions are there?

For half a day a week, the residents will meet with the core faculty for didactic sessions. The session will be held in different formats, such as traditional lectures, small group sessions, flipped classrooms, and group simulations.

Is there a journal club?

Yes. Each subspecialty rotation will have a journal article review session held with the faculty and the residents on that rotation. In addition, the program will host a department-wide journal club in a social setting led by the ambulatory team and guided by a faculty member. This will serve to not only promote growth of knowledge, but also allow the residents to get to know the faculty on a personal level.

What facilities will I have to go to as a resident?

The residents will cover two out of five hospitals in the Virtua system. Our primary site is Virtua Voorhees Hospital. Residents will spend 26 out of 48 months at this location. Our secondary hospital site is Virtua Mount Holly Hospital. Residents will spend 11 out of 48 months at this location. The residents will get a one-month elective. The remaining time is spent rotating through office settings in GYN oncology, FPMRS, MFM, family medicine, and the OB/GYN resident’s office.

Is there an elective rotation?

Yes. The elective month is in the third year. Residents can work with the program director to choose an appropriate rotation for their interest.

Is moonlighting allowed?

No. Under no circumstances is moonlighting allowed.

Are there any other residency programs at Virtua?

Kelli Daniels, MD
Residency Program Director, Department Obstetrics and Gynecology
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati Medical School, Dr. Daniels completed her resident training at Drexel University/Hahnemann Hospital. She served as the Program Director for the department of OB/GYN at Hahnemann University Hospital prior to its closing in 2019. She has received multiple teaching awards, including the CREOG National Faculty Award for Resident Education in 2017. When not at work, she enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Nicole Lamborne, MD, MBA
Medical Director for Women’s and Children’s Services
Dr. Lamborne completed her medical school at Rutgers University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and her residency at Cooper University Medical Center. She has primary oversight for the safety and quality of women’s services throughout the organization and works to ensure Virtua provides a healthy learning environment at both Virtua Voorhees Hospital and Virtua Mount Holly Hospital. Dr. Lamborne has championed Virtua’s initiatives to improve maternal outcomes while providing supervision of practice patterns and trends, CMS indicators, and Joint Commission standards.

Michelle Salvatore, MD
Site Director, Virtua Mount Holly Hospital
Michelle Salvatore, MD, has served as the site director for Drexel University College of Medicine students and Jefferson OB/GYN residents at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital since 2018. Dr. Salvatore has been in academic medicine, teaching medical students and residents, since 2003. Previously, she was course director for the UME Women’s Health Course and OB/GYN teaching core faculty at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.

Theresa Adeliyi, MD

Dr. Adeliyi graduated from The University of Toledo College of Medicine. She completed her residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Adeliyi has been with Virtua since 2021. She is happy to be a part of Virtua and loves teaching the residents.

Minda Green, MD

Dr. Green completed her medical school, residency training, and fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital. She served as the Assistant Fellowship Director for MIGS at Drexel until 2016. She has an interest in gynecologic surgery. Dr. Green has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the APGO and SASGOG awards. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, dining, and traveling.

Dipak Delvadia, DO
Site Director, Virtua Voorhees Hospital 
A graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Delvadia completed his residency at UMDNJ School of Medicine. He has spent his entire career in medical education, and has a special interest in global medicine, minimally invasive surgery, and research. He served as the Associate Program Director at Hahnemann University Hospital from 2006 to 2019. In his spare time, he likes to travel and stay in touch with friends and family.

Amy Zehnder, DO

Dr. Zehnder graduated from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and completed her residency at St. Luke Hospital. She has been a physician at Virtua for 10 years and has been a laborist for five. She truly enjoys teaching residents and medical students. When not working, you will find her spending time with her husband, two kids, dog, and seven chickens, or at the shore.

Randolph Deger, MD

A graduate of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Deger completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been in clinical practice for over 27 years and has held various academic appointment in different institutions.

Luisa Galdi, DO
Core Faculty/Generalist OB/GYN
A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Galdi completed her residency training at Reading Hospital. She has an interest in minimally invasive surgery, is NAMS certified, and is a master trainer in Team STEPPS.

Maria Keating, MD
Core Faculty/Laborists
Dr. Keating completed her medical school training at Weill Cornell Medical College and her OB/GYN residency at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital. She has previously worked in both private practice and academic medicine before joining the faculty at Virtua. She loves her “hybrid” role as a Laborist and Center for Women (CFW) doctor, where she has the opportunity to mentor and teach the Virtua residents in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Outside of work, her husband and three children keep her busy! In her free time, you might find her playing soccer or reading a good book.

Shailen Shah, MD
Lead Educator for Maternal Fetal Medicine
Dr. Shah completed his medical school, residency, and fellowship training at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He is board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine and has mentored numerous residents and fellows throughout his career.

Brett  Smith-Hams, MD, MPH
Dr. Smith-Hams (they/them/theirs) completed medical school at St. George's University School of Medicine and residency at Crozer Chester Medical Center. They are particularly passionate about family planning and pelvic, sexual, and reproductive healthcare for LGBTQIA+ folks. They are an enthusiastic teacher and mentor to physicians in training. When not in the hospital, Dr. Smith-Hams enjoys time outside with their partner and their dog, cooking and baking, and family game nights. 

Peter G. Van Deerlin, MD
Director of IVF Programs
Dr. Van Deerlin is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist in a busy private fertility practice near Virtua Marlton and Voorhees campuses. He has been training residents throughout his for 26 years as an attending at Virtua. He performs surgeries such as laparoscopic tubal reversals and all manner of myomectomies [mostly robotic and hysteroscopic] and performs lysis of complete uterine septa via hysteroscope. He earned a medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis where he also did his residency training (Barnes Hospital). He received his fellowship training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Kristene Whitmore, MD
Lead Educator for Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
A graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine, Dr. Whitmore completed her residency in urology at UCLA. She served as Chair of Urology and Director of FPMRS from 2007 to 2019 at Drexel University. She founded and served as Fellowship Director for FPMRS from 2009 to 2019 at Drexel. She has multiple publications in the field and has served as a mentor to countless fellows and residents.

Justice Harris, BA, MS
OB/GYN ME Coordinator
Justice has been with the OB/GYN residency program since November 2020. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies in December of 2018 from Rowan University. She returned to Rowan for her Master’s and graduated in May 2022 with a degree in Higher Education Advising.  A fun fact about Justice: She absolutely LOVES Chick-fil-a!
