Internal Medicine Residency Program
We appreciate your interest in our program!
Virtua is South Jersey’s largest health system, committed to the mission of helping people be well, get well, and stay well. As part of Virtua Health, our residency program offers diverse experiences and educational opportunities serving communities throughout the southern New Jersey region.
Program Information
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine residency program at Virtua Health.
Our Internal Medicine residency is centered at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (VOLOL) in Camden, N.J., and offers valuable educational opportunities at various Virtua inpatient and outpatient sites over the three-year training period.
For nearly four decades, Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital has been actively involved in educating resident physicians and students. Initially sponsored by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and later by a consortium of Rowan University SOM/Jefferson Health NJ/Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes, the hospital's attending physicians and staff have gained extensive expertise in supporting and guiding medical residents. Furthermore, Virtua Health has proudly served as a stand-alone ACGME (American College of Graduate Medical Education) sponsoring institution for nearly 25 years, presently supporting 10 residencies and fellowships.
The Virtua Lady of Lourdes campus provides an exceptional setting for training medical residents, offering an extensive range of services that cater to the region's needs, from general medical/surgical care to high-level tertiary and quaternary care programs. At VOLOL, we take pride in providing outstanding services in advanced cardiovascular care, including advanced heart failure care, complex cardiac interventions, and cardiac thoracic surgery.
Lourdes is distinguished for its expertise in complex surgery, and the management of acute/chronic liver and kidney disease, including liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. It stands as the sole medical facility in New Jersey performing liver and combined kidney/pancreas transplantation, achieving some of the nation's most impressive outcomes.
Located just over the Ben Franklin Bridge from Philadelphia, Pa., VOLOL is a pivotal part of the Virtua Health System, the largest health system in South Jersey, encompassing five hospitals situated in Willingboro, Mount Holly, Marlton, Voorhees, and Camden, alongside the Virtua Medical Group with over 280 locations throughout the region. Virtua Health stands as an innovative healthcare provider, boasting strategic affiliations throughout the Philadelphia/South Jersey region. We are especially proud of our major affiliation with Penn Medicine, which spans neuroscience, oncology, and pediatric care, and includes partnership in the only Proton Therapy Center in South Jersey. Our diverse patient population hails from highly varied communities, drawing referral patients from across the tri-state region. This wealth of clinical programs, combined with the breadth of our patient demographics, provides our residents with a rich classroom for immersive and comprehensive learning experiences. Here, our residents truly have the opportunity to learn Medicine at its finest—at the bedside.
Virtua has forged an esteemed affiliation with Rowan University Virtua, creating the prestigious Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences of Rowan University. Ranked as the fourth-fastest growing research institution among public doctoral universities, Rowan University's affiliation offers our residents exceptional opportunities to engage in unique educational experiences and contribute to wide-ranging research projects, guided by highly experienced faculty.
We wholeheartedly believe that our program presents an outstanding opportunity for our residents to not only acquire the scientific knowledge and clinical skills required to become expert Internists but also to cultivate the professional behaviors necessary to thrive as collaborative and compassionate members of the healthcare team, dedicated to serving our communities and the region.
Your interest in our program is sincerely appreciated. We are currently accepting applications to the residency program through ERAS and eagerly anticipate getting to know you better throughout the review process. We look forward to the potential of joining forces with you as we work together to fulfill your career aspirations.
